Key services for private clients and examples of our recent work:
We have built our residential property team to meet the differing needs of developers, investors, purchasers & sellers. We balance the commercial, legal and individual needs of all those involved in the process to ensure a successful outcome, and are well-resourced to work for clients in the UK and internationally.
Principal Tower, London EC2
Sherrards’ residential property team is working with international and UK based buyers of luxury apartments and penthouses in this exclusive development. It is London’s first residential tower designed fully by world-famous architects, Foster and Partners. Principal Tower is in the heart of the City’s financial district and within walking distance of the cultural hub of Shoreditch.
The Nova Building, London SW1
The residential property team in London, led by Asha Ngai, recently acted for a client on the purchase of a penthouse flat worth £10.5 million on Buckingham Palace Road. Nova is a prestigious development of 170 flats in Victoria and is one of the most fashionable and desirable new addresses in London. The state-of-the-art development offers all residents 24-hour concierge services; rooftop garden areas; a fitness suite; a resident only cinema; a private lounge and business centre; and several restaurants. Asha and her team worked with the agents and lenders to ensure the purchase was completed on time and as smoothly as possible.
Family Investment Companies.
Our Corporate & Commercial department provide advice in respect of family investment companies (FIC). These are usually incorporated as private limited or unlimited companies which are created for wealth accumulation and family succession planning. They are attractive alternatives to trusts, generally incurring lower running costs & offering appealing tax treatment.
Recently, Partner Andrew Cooke structured a Jersey Family Investment Company intended to hold a diverse portfolio of securities in excess of £10m initially, and which included debt finance considerations.
He also created an onshore FIC intended to hold a large property portfolio, including bespoke provisions to ensure the FIC was controlled appropriately.
Our litigation & dispute resolution team advise those looking to protect their reputation & their wealth. We focus on providing a prompt, accessible and responsive service that manages risk and maximises the strengths of the client’s position. We look to achieve the best results at the most effective cost, with an emphasis on providing commercial, strategic advice.
International services for private clients.
As well as offering UK private client services such as Wills, Trusts & Probate, our international private client team’s background is in dealing with wealth management (i.e. inheritance tax mitigation) and succession planning for both domiciled and non-domiciled high-net worth individuals, families, family offices & trusts.
International Tax and Succession Planning
The Private Client Team, led by Head of Department, Nicole Marmor, acted for a married couple who were domiciled in different jurisdictions, the husband having been born in Argentina. They lived for some time in the US and also in the UK with dual citizenship. Although they subsequently gave up their US citizenship, they retained substantial private equity in the US, and between them the couple owned properties all over the world. The matter involved putting suitable wills and powers of attorney in place and liaising with several different foreign lawyers to draw up Wills in a variety of jurisdictions and also advising on issues of domicile, succession and inheritance.
Liz Jones, Partner in the London Private Client team, has acted for several years for the executors and subsequent trustees of a large multi jurisdictional estate with assets in France, Guernsey and Scandinavia. Her work has included the establishing of an offshore trust structure for a minor beneficiary resident in Scandinavia, which involved dealing with complex multi-jurisdictional tax issues and conflicts of UK succession law and forced heir-ship rules in the other jurisdictions.
Estate and Succession Planning
The London Private Client team recently assisted a prominent Vintner located in the UK, the South of France and South Africa. This involved complex estate and succession planning, tackling conflicts of law relating to the succession of the vineyard in France and the preparation of tailored wills dealing with domicile and mitigation of inheritance tax in the UK.
Charitable Incorporated Organisations
Nicola Edmondson, Senior Solicitor in the London Private Client team, acts for numerous high net worth philanthropists in the establishment of Charitable Incorporated Organisations. Her work most recently has included establishing an animal shelter in the West Bank, which involved her dealing successfully with conflicts of UK and Israeli charity law. Other recent work has included establishing an educational foundation in the UK, with a focus on promoting women in STEM.
Our immigration solicitor works with individuals to help them to enter and remain in the UK. Melissa Vangeen has particular expertise in employment visas, investors’ visas, entrepreneurs’ visas, partners’ and dependents’ visas, student visas, visit visas and all EEA applications.
Melissa has recently acted for an oligarch, living in the United Kingdom but with global business interests. He wished to apply for indefinite leave to remain having held a Tier 1 (Investor) visa for several years. He was able to qualify for settlement after 3 years as he had invested at least £3 million by way of share capital or loan capital in active and trading UK registered companies (although he could have applied for settlement after 2 years had he invested at least £10 million). We worked with him to ensure that his investments over the years were efficient for him whilst also maintaining compliance with the UK Immigration Rules to secure his eligibility for indefinite leave to remain for him, his wife and their children.
