Penalties for illegal working are set to triple from the New Year so it is essential for employers to ensure that all paperwork is up to date so that a surprise visit from the Home Office would cause no alarm. Partner and Head of Immigration at Sherrards, Emma Peacock, explains...

The last increase to the civil penalty was in 2014. From January 2024 , this will be raised up to £45,000 per illegal worker for a first breach (from £15,000), and up to £60,000 for repeat breaches (from £20,000).
