The relevance of legal directories discussed at showcase panel, at the IBA conference in Sydney

Paul Marmor, head of Litigation and Dispute Resolution and responsible for the development of Sherrards’ International Services, recently presented at a panel at the International Bar Association’s annual conference in Sydney, on the relevance of legal directories.

The panel included David Burgess, the Publishing Director of the Legal 500, which is among the most prestigious of the UK and global legal directories; Rabindra Jhunjhunwala, Corporate Partner in Khaitan & Co., which is a leading corporate law firm with offices in Mumbai and across India; Andrés Jaramillo-Mejía of New York and global law firm Greenberg Traurig; Ursula Ben-Hammou Novoa, of leading Peruvian law firm Rodrigo, Elias & Medrano; and Paul Martenstyn, from one of Britain and Singapore’s leading banking and commercial sets of barristers, Fountain Court.

The up-shot of the discussion was that legal directories can be really important, for a variety of reasons.

David Burgess made an interesting observation, that “Legal directories can really help a law firm to keep its eye on the ball, by performing an internal audit in order to organise its submissions and prepare for the research process, which means that a firm will stay on top of its game.”

As Rabindra Jhunjhunwala commented: “Directories can really help with referrals from firm to firm on an international basis.”

Andrés Jaramillo-Mejía added: “Directories can also help generate referrals to law firms from counsel and in-house counsel with businesses and banks.”

Ursula Ben-Hammou Novoa was able to comment that: “Legal directories can really help firms to attract and retain talent.”

Paul Martenstyn said that: “Directories can be very effective if properly used by a law firm, or indeed a set of barristers, to leverage their position in their particular market-place, and as a point of reference for the world generally.”

If you are interested in the content of the discussion, then some of the members of the panel, including Paul Marmor, David Burgess and Andrés Jaramillo-Mejía, presented a live video webinar, which is available from the IBA’s website:

The IBA itself has a membership of more than 80,000 individual lawyers and more than 190 bar associations in over 160 countries. It has considerable expertise in providing assistance to the global legal community.

Sherrards’ connectivity to the IBA, alongside our membership of the Alliott Group Worldwide Alliance of Law and Accountancy Firms, means that we are able to call upon our professional colleagues across the globe when international support is needed.
