East Meets West

China_ukLaurel (XueYing) Zhang, a native Mandarin speaker from Beijing and head of Sherrards’ China and Far East desk, is the new driving force behind the firm’s strategy to provide specialist tailored legal support to Chinese investors entering the UK.

Over the last few years, Sherrards has built up vast experience in advising clients from the Far East on their legal matters in the UK. Through its China and Far East Desk, Sherrards offers a more personalised service for discerning clients from China and the Far East who are looking for a firm in the UK with the right skill sets and the cultural know-how to facilitate doing business in the UK.

Laurel Zhang, who joined Sherrards from a boutique City law firm, graduated in law with first-class honours from one of China’s top universities, and has received a number of prizes for her academic achievements. Laurel has had many academic legal articles published in the China National Social Sciences Journal, including one article laurel-zhangpublished in the most prestigious Chinese journal. She moved to the UK to complete an LLM at UCL, before embarking on qualification as a Solicitor, and came to Sherrards from a boutique City law firm.

Her main focus is on assisting clients based in the Far East to meet their commercial and corporate needs in the UK, not only providing excellent legal support but also connecting clients to the right people. Laurel comments: “As a Chinese specialist lawyer, I had a choice of firms at which to house my practice, but I chose Sherrards because the combination of their hands-on approach and international capability. The firm’s extensive range of legal services – whether it’s company commercial, commercial property or dispute resolution – make them a natural partner for businesses from the Far East.”

Paul Marmor, Partner and Head of International Services comments: “Few firms of our size in London offer what we can to Chinese investors- not only lawyers with experience of cross border Chinese related transactions and disputes, but also connections to people in high places who can help to get business done with maximum efficiency in the UK. The fact that Laurel has chosen to base her practice within Sherrards endorses our credibility as a firm of real substance for Chinese companies and individuals who have interests in the UK.”
